Sub-Zero Sealed System Repair
Sealed system repair is the deep end of Sub-Zero service — compressor, evaporator, condenser, and the refrigerant circuit that connects them. It is the repair most companies decline, and the one we specialize in. Wolf & Viking Service performs Sub-Zero sealed system repairs across the South Bay, backed by 10+ years of experience and a warranty of up to 2 years on select repairs. Call (310) 361-3551 for a diagnosis.
Symptoms we're called for
- Temperature creeping up gradually over weeks despite normal settings
- Compressor running non-stop without ever reaching temperature
- EC40 or EC50 code, or a Service warning on the display
- One localized area of frost near the evaporator while the rest warms
- Unit already serviced elsewhere, but the problem keeps returning
- Cooling loss with no obvious fan, door, or airflow explanation
What the repair involves
A sealed system fault cannot be fixed by swapping a board or a fan — it requires opening the refrigerant circuit, correcting the failure, and restoring the system properly. Our technicians diagnose whether the fault truly is the sealed system (a refrigerant leak, a failing compressor, an evaporator problem) or something cheaper masquerading as one; more than a few 'dead compressor' calls turn out to be an evaporator fan, which we also repair — one such fan replacement in Rancho Palos Verdes took 40 minutes. When it is the sealed system, we do the full repair: a five-hour refrigerator sealed-system job in Manhattan Beach and a seven-hour freezer refrigerant-leak repair in Rancho Palos Verdes are recent examples. The quote always comes before the work, with no hidden fees.
Repair or replace?
This is the repair where the replace question comes up most, and the honest answer is: for a built-in Sub-Zero, a sealed system repair usually wins. Replacing the unit means a new appliance plus cabinetry and panel work, while a sealed system repair addresses the core of the machine and is exactly the category where our extended coverage applies — up to 2 years on select repairs, 1 year standard. If the diagnosis suggests the unit is not worth the investment, we say so before you spend anything on the repair itself.
Every completed repair is covered by our written warranty — 1 year by default, up to 2 years on select repairs. Warranty details.

Questions about this repair
What exactly is the sealed system?
It is the closed refrigerant loop that does the actual cooling: the compressor, evaporator, condenser, and the tubing between them. 'Sealed' means it is factory-closed — servicing it requires opening the circuit and restoring it correctly, which is specialist work rather than a parts swap.
My display shows EC40 (or EC50). Does that mean the sealed system failed?
Not necessarily — these codes and the Service warning tell you the unit has detected a cooling problem, not which component caused it. Note the exact code and tell us when you book; the technician confirms the true cause on site before anything is quoted or replaced.
How long does a sealed system repair take?
These are the longest repairs we do. Recent Sub-Zero sealed system jobs in the area ran about five hours for a refrigerator in Manhattan Beach and about seven hours for a freezer with a refrigerant leak in Rancho Palos Verdes. Your technician will give you a realistic estimate for your unit after diagnosis.
What warranty applies to sealed system work?
Completed repairs carry a 1-year warranty by default, and select repairs qualify for up to 2 years of coverage. Sealed system work is precisely the kind of repair where that extended coverage matters — ask when you receive your quote, and the term will be stated on the invoice.
