Signs of a Sub-Zero sealed-system problem
The short answer
Suspect the sealed system when cooling degrades gradually rather than stopping outright, when the compressor runs constantly without reaching temperature, when frost patterns appear on only part of the evaporator, or when the unit is warm while the condenser stays cool. Airflow and control faults usually fail more abruptly — and unlike them, a refrigerant problem never fixes itself.
What the sealed system actually is
It is the closed refrigerant loop that does the cooling: compressor, evaporator, condenser and the tubing between them. 'Sealed' means factory-closed — servicing it means opening the circuit and restoring it correctly, which is specialist work rather than a parts swap.
Symptoms that point at the sealed system
- Gradual decline. Temperatures drift up over weeks. Fans and boards tend to fail suddenly; refrigerant leaves slowly.
- The compressor runs and runs. It is working, but the compartment never reaches setpoint — the loop cannot move the heat it used to.
- Partial frost on the evaporator. Frost on part of the coil and bare metal on the rest suggests low refrigerant charge rather than a defrost fault.
- A warm unit with a cool condenser. Little heat being rejected means little heat being moved.
- One compartment fine, the other failing. On dual-refrigeration units each side has its own loop, so a single-side failure is meaningful.
Symptoms that usually mean something cheaper
- Cooling stops completely and suddenly, with no compressor sound at all — more often a board or relay (example).
- Temperatures drift with the compressor running normally and airflow weak — often an evaporator fan (example).
- Ice building on the rear wall — frequently a temperature sensor reporting the compartment incorrectly (example).
- Gradual decline preceded by a dusty condenser — sometimes maintenance is the whole answer.
This is exactly why the diagnosis matters more than the guess: several much cheaper faults imitate the expensive one.
Why a refrigerant 'top-up' is not a repair
Refrigerant is not consumed. If the charge is low, it escaped through a leak — and adding more without finding that leak sells the same repair again next season. A proper job locates the leak, replaces the affected components, then evacuates, recharges to specification and pressure-tests the system (how we did exactly that).
Is it worth repairing?
