Questions to ask before approving a sealed-system repair
The short answer
Ask four things: how the fault was confirmed (tested, or assumed?), exactly which components are being replaced, whether the system will be evacuated, recharged to specification and pressure-tested, and what warranty covers the work in writing. A repair that cannot answer all four clearly is a repair worth a second opinion.
Why this quote deserves scrutiny
A sealed-system repair is the largest single repair a built-in refrigerator can need. It is also the one where a shortcut is invisible on the day and obvious six months later — which is why the questions below are worth asking, of us or anyone else.
1. How was the fault confirmed?
There is a real difference between 'the symptoms suggest a leak' and 'we tested the system and located the leak'. Several cheaper faults imitate a sealed-system failure — evaporator fans, sensors, boards and dirty condensers among them. A technician should be able to say what was measured and what it ruled out.
2. What exactly is being replaced?
Compressor only? Compressor and evaporator? Filter drier and heat exchanger too? The scope drives the price and the durability of the fix. Replacing a compressor while leaving a contaminated drier in place is a common way to be back in a year.
3. Will the system be evacuated, recharged to specification and pressure-tested?
This is the part customers rarely ask about and the part that determines whether the repair holds. Moisture and air left in an opened circuit will damage it. The correct sequence — evacuate, charge to the manufacturer's specification, then pressure-test — should be stated plainly, not implied.
4. What warranty covers the work?
In writing, on the invoice, with the term stated. Our completed repairs carry a 1-year warranty by default and up to 2 years on select repairs, and the applicable term is confirmed before work begins — warranty details.
Two more worth asking
- Are the parts OEM? On these platforms, yes matters. We install OEM parts.
- Is repair actually the right call? A good technician will tell you when it is not. See repair versus replacement.
