Why won't my Viking range ignite?

The short answer

Match the symptom to the cause: clicking with no flame usually means the burner cap is misaligned or wet, or the gas is off; one burner that never sparks points to its electrode; no burner sparking points to the spark module; and continuous clicking with the knobs off means a stuck spark switch. Dry and reseat the burner caps first — beyond that, ignition parts are gas-adjacent work for a technician.

Read the symptom first

Viking ignition problems look alike from across the kitchen but come from very different parts. Sorting them by what you hear and see saves an unnecessary service call — or tells you to book one immediately.

It clicks but never lights

The spark is working, so the problem is either at the burner or with gas delivery. A burner cap sitting slightly off-center, or still damp after cleaning, will interrupt ignition every time. So will a gas supply that was shut off and not fully reopened.

One burner never sparks, the others do

That burner's electrode is worn, cracked or fouled. Electrodes erode with heat and spills over the years — we replaced worn electrodes on a Viking range for exactly this pattern (see the job).

No burner sparks at all

One shared component serves the whole cooktop: the spark module. When none of the burners spark, testing the module directly is faster and cheaper than swapping electrodes one at a time (a recent Viking spark module replacement).

It clicks constantly, even with everything off

That is a stuck spark switch rather than an ignition failure, and it has its own fixes — see why Viking burners keep clicking.

It lights, but slowly — and you smell gas first

Stop using that burner. Delayed ignition means gas is flowing well before it lights, so it pools and then catches at once. Worn igniters cause it, and it is the ignition fault we treat most urgently (what that repair looks like).

What is safe for you to check

  • Confirm the gas supply valve is fully open and other gas appliances work.
  • Make sure the burner caps and grates are dry, clean and correctly seated.
  • Check the range has power — the ignition system needs electricity even on a gas range.

That is the whole safe list. Do not remove the burner deck, test electrodes, or work near the gas connections.

When to stop and call

Any gas odor, any continuous sparking, or any delayed ignition is a call, not a project. We diagnose the ignition circuit properly, quote before work, and install OEM parts — backed by a 1-year warranty, up to 2 years on select repairs. Call or text (310) 361-3551 or see our Viking range service.
