Sub-Zero 600: Two Columns, Two Faults

ApplianceSub-Zero
LocationPalos Verdes Estates, CA
Reported symptomOne column not cooling; water leaking from the second
Work performedDiagnostic visit on both columns: traced the loss of cooling in the first to a refrigerant leak in the sealed system, and the water on the floor at the second to its water line rather than any refrigeration fault.

What happened

Two Sub-Zero 600-series columns installed side by side, and two complaints that looked related but were not. The first column had stopped cooling; the second was leaking water. It is tempting to assume one cause behind both — a shared install problem, a shared failure.

Testing said otherwise. The column that was not cooling had lost refrigerant: a sealed-system fault, and the expensive one. The leaking column had a healthy refrigeration system — its water was coming from the water line, which has nothing to do with cooling at all.

This is why we diagnose each unit on its own rather than pattern-matching across a kitchen. Had we assumed the leak was the same sealed-system problem, the owner would have been quoted twice for the wrong work.
