Sub-Zero 561 Cold Control Replacement

The cold control is the part that tells the compressor when to run and when to stop. When it starts to fail it does not die outright — it drops out at random, which is exactly what the owner described: a refrigerator that switched itself off for no obvious reason and then came back.

That intermittent pattern is the giveaway. A dead compressor or a sealed-system fault produces a steady failure; a control fault produces an inconsistent one. Replacing the cold control with an OEM part restored normal cycling.

Worth noting what this unit is: a 500-series Sub-Zero, a generation now decades old — and still fully serviceable. The refrigeration system label on the door reads 561, and parts for it remain available. Age alone is not a reason to replace a Sub-Zero.
