What happened
Before condemning an ice maker we check the cheap causes first: freezer temperature, the shutoff arm, and whether water is reaching the unit at all. Here all three were fine and the assembly itself had failed.
An OEM ice maker went in and we stayed to watch a full cycle complete rather than leaving the owner to find out overnight.
